Sage Payroll and HR Software Review

Sage HRMS Strengths & Weaknesses

Sage’s competitive positioning in the payroll (and wider HR) software market can be summarized by highlighting the following strengths and weaknesses:

Sage HRMS Strengths

  • Clients can submit suggestions for current system flaws and future system directions via Sage's integrated feedback mechanism – what’s more, Sage respects this input and ultimately uses it to modify and evolve the Sage HRMS solution.
  • The user interface (UI) (not dissimilar in appearance and use to Microsoft Outlook) is intuitive and simple, providing end-users with an easy-to-learn and easy-to-use HR software system.
  • Sage HRMS 2012 has finally eliminated the requirements for multiple log-ons by utilizing MS Active Directory log-on.
  • For clients using Sage ERP MAS 500, the latest version of Sage HRMS now permits for easy data transfer between the payroll/HR database and the back-office accounting software without the need for information to be rekeyed.
  • Sage’s mature business partner and value added reseller (VAR) network offers comprehensive local service delivery throughout the world.
  • With over three decades of experience within the business software industry, Sage is a large and established enterprise software company and has proven to be equally adept at both acquisitions and product strategy.

Sage HRMS Weaknesses

  • Functionality within Sage HRMS is sometimes awkwardly divided and can result in a sacrifice of capability for (artificially-situated) flexibility (e.g. the employee self-service component is treated as an optional module rather than a part of the core package).
  • By acquiring business software companies late in their maturity model, Sage is sometimes in possession of dated technology that needs updating. However, the technology upgrade schedule tends to be glacial once a solution is in the Sage portfolio.
  • Some pundits and critics have opined that the aggressive and prolonged M&A strategy has resulted in significant integration issues between disparate software offerings. Sage has a reputation of acquiring business software products that seemingly appear to be ideal partners with potential synergistic value, but failing to then instigate such integration; thus creating a segregated rather than united software portfolio.
  • Social media functionality and capabilities are severely lacking especially in the form of social tools integration and access to social networks and online channels.
